Elon Musk, the person behind Tesla and SpaceX, made a big announcement in April 2022. He wanted to buy Twitter, not just for fun, but to get rid of spam bots and protect people’s right to speak freely. He spoke at a TED conference on the same day he made the offer, saying he strongly felt that having a trusted and open platform is super important for the world’s future, even if it doesn’t make much money.
Even though Elon Musk is super rich, $44 billion is a lot even for him. He still decided to buy Twitter, but later he changed his mind and tried to cancel the deal in May. He said Twitter had more spam bots than they admitted. After a messy legal process, including some embarrassing text messages, Musk had to go through with the deal. By October, he owned Twitter. Since Elon Musk took over Twitter and made it X, there have been lots of changes. People had trouble getting verified, they changed how other apps could use Twitter, they lifted bans on some accounts, laid off many workers, and most importantly, they gave the platform a new name, X.
Elon Musk’s new name X has encountered a challenge in Indonesia. The website X.com has been blocked in the country due to restrictions on online content related to pornography and gambling.
Indonesia’s Ministry of Communication and Informatics explained that the site was restricted because its domain had been associated with websites that violated the country’s stringent regulations against “harmful” content like pornography and gambling.
Twitter is now X
Elon Musk recently announced a notable transformation for the widely recognized bird logo associated with the social media giant. The announcement, made over the weekend of July 22nd, unveiled a bold new ‘X’ logo, signifying a strategic shift in the brand’s identity. Notably, this change was accompanied by a redirect of Musk’s own x.com to twitter.com, further solidifying the transition.
However, it’s important to note that Musk himself has referred to this logo as an “interim” one, implying the possibility of yet another logo metamorphosis in the future. This suggests that the brand is in a state of flux, continuously seeking to redefine itself and adapt to the ever-evolving digital landscape.
What is X, the Everything app?
Elon Musk has talked before about wanting to turn Twitter into a super app, like the popular apps WeChat. In 2022, on a All-in podcast, Musk said that the US needs a super app. He suggested that Twitter could become one or he might create a new app. He felt it was important to have something like this.
Musk explained that in China, people use an app called WeChat for lots of things. It’s like combining Twitter, PayPal, and other stuff into one app. He thought it was a great app, and he wished there was something similar outside of China.
He had a vision for this super app to be a kind of online gathering place where people can chat and share videos. Once people trust the app a lot, he believed it could also be used for making payments, whether using cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin or regular money. In simple terms, Musk wanted to make Twitter into a really useful and trusted app where you can do many things in one place, like talking to others, watching videos, and even making payments. He saw it as a way to bring people together digitally and make things more convenient.
What is the significance of the letter X?
Elon Musk’s fascination with the letter X goes back a long time and is at the heart of his idea for creating an “everything app” called X. The letter “X” has always held a special place in Musk’s life, from the name of his companies to his children’s names. While the exact reason for his fondness for “X” remains a mystery as Musk hasn’t explained it himself, those close to him have come up with various explanations for his strong connection to this enigmatic letter. About 24 years ago, Musk started something called X.com, which was an online bank he co-founded in 1999. That bank later joined another company and became PayPal, a well-known online payment system.
In 2017, Musk got the domain name X.com back from PayPal, and he didn’t reveal how much he paid for it. He mentioned on Twitter that this domain name meant a lot to him emotionally. Around the same time, Musk was also busy with his other ventures. He started SpaceX, a company focused on space exploration, in 2002. Through his car company, Tesla, he introduced a vehicle called the Model X in 2015.
When Musk wanted to buy Twitter, he set up three companies in Delaware in 2022, and they all had names related to “X Holdings.” This showed how much he was connecting his projects and ideas with the letter X. This year, in April, legal documents showed that the official Twitter, Inc. was no longer in existence. Because of this, Musk told the business partners of Twitter that the company would now be operating under the name “X Corp.”
Conclusion
As we eagerly await the unfolding of X’s vision, we can anticipate a future where the platform becomes a bustling marketplace of ideas, goods, services, and opportunities. Powered by AI, X aims to connect us all in ways that were once unimaginable, transforming the way we interact in the digital realm.
In this dynamic age of technological advancement, X represents a gateway to uncharted territories, where users can explore, collaborate, and engage in a seamless digital experience. With Twitter’s legacy as a launching pad, the evolution into X promises to redefine the very essence of social media, empowering users to discover and embrace the untapped potential of the online world.
